The 6.8 standard gets repeated constantly. Travel coaches cite it. Camp brochures list it. Families build training plans around it. But that number is wrong as a D1 signal. The 7-band data makes that clear.

Where Does the 6.8 Standard Come From?

The 6.8 benchmark is old coaching shorthand. It came from before exit velocity and arm velocity were tracked at every showcase. Coaches needed simple filters. Sub-6.8 was one of them.

That shorthand traveled without verification. It moved from coach to coach. It got repeated at events. Nobody checked it against the real pool of recruited outfielders.

A filter from an earlier era is now treated as a threshold. That is not the same thing. The band data is the check.

What Is the 7-Band Outfield System?

The seven bands organize recruited outfielders by where they fall in BaseballPath's data. Band 1 is the top of the sample. Band 7 is the lower edge of the actively recruited range. The bands do not map to specific divisions. They show where a player sits in the full recruited outfield pool.

Each band covers a range for one metric. The ranges come from the actual distribution of outfielder profiles in the database, measured at or near commitment time.

Three metrics are tracked independently. Sixty time measures speed. Exit velocity measures hitting power. Arm velocity measures throwing strength. No single score combines them. Each one stands on its own.

Sample sizes differ because not every showcase captures every metric. Sixty time: 4,915 players. Exit velocity: 5,086 players. Arm velocity: 4,856 players.

What Are the Outfield Benchmarks for Each Band?

Sixty time is a descending metric. Lower numbers sit in higher bands. Exit velocity and arm velocity are ascending metrics. Higher numbers sit in higher bands.

What Does Each Band Mean for Your Profile?

Band 1 is a standout outfield profile at any level. A player here runs the sixty at 6.56 seconds or below. His exit velocity is 100.52 mph or better. His arm sits at 92.0 mph or above. All three metrics at this level draw attention from programs across all divisions.

Bands 2 and 3 put a player in the upper third of the recruited pool. Sixty times here run 6.56 to 6.71 seconds. Exit velocity spans 97.6 to 100.51 mph. Arm velocity runs 89.0 to 91.99 mph. The tool set at this level is a genuine strength in any outfield conversation.

Band 4 sits just above the midpoint. Sixty times here run 6.71 to 6.80 seconds. Exit velocity lands between 96.0 and 97.59 mph. Arm velocity runs 87.0 to 88.99 mph. This is a competitive outfield profile in the upper half of the distribution.

Band 5 begins at the midpoint. A 6.80 sixty sits at the Band 4/5 boundary. Sixty times in Band 5 run 6.80 to 6.89 seconds. Exit velocity spans 94.2 to 95.99 mph. Arm velocity runs 86.0 to 86.99 mph. This profile is not disqualifying on its own. But it is in the lower half of the pool.

Bands 6 and 7 put a player in the bottom quarter of the recruited outfield pool. Sixty times run above 6.89 seconds. Exit velocity falls below 94.19 mph. Arm velocity sits under 84.0 mph. A player here is still in the recruited sample. But his profile needs something to carry the conversation. An exceptional bat, strong reads in center, or a good academic fit can shift the picture.

Is 90 MPH Arm Strength the D1 Outfield Standard?

No. In BaseballPath's data, 90 mph arm velocity sits in Band 3. Band 3 arm velocity runs 89.0 to 90.99 mph. That is the upper third of all recruited outfielders. It is not a qualifying threshold.

The midpoint of the arm velocity sample is 87.0 mph. That is the Band 4/5 boundary. About half of all recruited outfielders throw 87.0 mph or harder. An outfielder at 90 mph has a real strength. He is in the upper third of the entire recruited pool.

The 90 mph shorthand came from the same place the 6.8 myth did. It described the upper portion of the pool. Then it got repeated as a floor. Then it stuck.

Arm velocity tells a coach one specific thing: how hard an outfielder throws. It is measured apart from exit velocity and from speed. A strong arm is a real asset. The threshold attached to it has just been wrong.

How to Read All Three Metrics Together

All three metrics are independent. None cancel each other.

A strong arm does not cover a slow sixty. A high exit velocity does not offset a weak arm. Coaches evaluate throwing strength on every ball hit to the outfield. Each metric answers a different question. Sixty time answers the speed question. Exit velocity answers the bat question. Arm velocity answers the throwing question.

Look at your three numbers in the same band context. A player in Band 2 on speed but Band 6 on arm is a different profile from one in Band 3 across all three. The gap in any single metric is real. Do not read one number without the other two beside it.

A strength in one area gives a recruiting conversation a real place to start. It does not erase a gap in another.
