How we rank his schools
Four steps take his raw numbers to the school at number one. Here is each step. One human judgment enters the read. We show you where it enters, and how far it can move things.
1. His numbers, scored by position and grad year
Every number he gives us lands in a percentile band. The bands come from a table of cutoffs built on real college players. Then we add the bands up. The weights change by position. Size adds a bonus of its own. Pitchers add one more, for repertoire and for throwing left-handed.
Same numbers in, same answer out, every time. It is a rubric, which means a set of rules we publish. Nothing is trained. Nothing is learned when he hits submit. The total becomes a tier, plus a spot inside that tier. Both come off published thresholds.
Freshmen and sophomores get one extra step. You should hear it from us, not find it on your own. We grow their numbers forward to the recruiting window. Then the same scoring runs again on the grown numbers. It is for freshmen and sophomores only. It only ever moves up. It shows what he projects to, not what he is today.
2. His grades, scored on their own, against each school's admitted range
His grades get their own score. His GPA and his test score, if he has one, make one academic score. We hold that score up to each school's own admitted students. Not to one national bar. And we never fold it into the baseball number.
That is why grades move his list as much as velocity does.
3. Their roster, read for room
Every school on his list carries a band. The band comes from that school's own roster. When a school's data is thin, we use its conference instead. If that is thin too, we use its division. Then the ranking weighs how well he fits. It weighs how open the spot looks, too.
One school fits him perfectly and has no room. Another fits him perfectly and needs an arm. We do not rank those two the same.
4. The reason, written out, so you can argue with it
Every school on the list carries three or four reasons. They are specific. They are in plain words. Each one is about him and about that program.
A coach can tell those were written by somebody who looked.
The one place a human judgment enters
A second pass writes the reason for each school. It can move a school up or down, but only inside a hard limit. It never changes his score, his tier, or his range.
The limit is set in code. It is fourteen points of a school's composite fit. Every school and every family gets the same limit.
A range is never a verdict. The read is directional. It moves when a number moves.
