Start with the number your report names

The report already names what is holding him back. One metric can sit two full bands above the rest of his own profile. When it does, the report says so in plain words. That one number is carrying the whole read. Start there. That line is where a new number counts the most.

Open his report and find that line first.

Then remeasure it the way a coach would

Say the method out loud when you do. Method is why two honest numbers disagree.

• A tee is not a game

  A tee number and a game number are not the same number. A tee sits about five to ten mph over a game number. A tee takes the live pitch out of it. That leaves barrel accuracy, not game hitting. Coaches expect that gap. The gap that costs him is his best swing ever against what he really gets.

• The big events do not measure the same way as each other

  Perfect Game reads exit velo at a hitting station. The number comes off a sensor on the bat. Prep Baseball Report runs on a franchise model. That means the setup can change from one event to the next. Two verified numbers can disagree for that reason alone. That is a method gap, not noise. Cite the event, the station, and the date. The name of the group alone is not enough.

• A pulldown is not a mound number

  A run-and-gun pulldown runs about six mph over true mound velo. Six is what to expect, not a ceiling. Gaps for one player run from about one mph to about ten. A big gap is a warning, not a bonus. Take a pitcher whose pulldown sits ten over his mound velo. He has a mound-velocity problem, not a hidden ten mph. A crow-hop is a throw right after he fields a ground ball. It beats a flat-footed throw by about three to four mph.

• Sitting is not touching

  Coaches recruit off what a pitcher sits at. That is the number he really gets, start after start. Not the one reading he touched. Even a major league starter tops out close to his average fastball. The gap there is about two to three mph. A high school arm's gap is usually wider.

• A hand time is not a laser time

  A hand-started stopwatch reads faster than a laser. The gap is about a tenth of a second. That is with a good timer, on a good day. That is the timer's thumb, not the runner's legs.

• A real radar, used correctly, is a real number

  Pocket Radar says it reads within one mph, plus or minus. That is the maker's own claim. A dated reading off a named device counts. The day he touched 88, with no date on it, does not.

How to get a number a coach will accept

1. A named, dated Perfect Game or Prep Baseball Report event. The number should be on that event's page. Cite the event and the station, not the group alone.
2. A college program's own camp or prospect day. Their staff holds the gun.
3. A facility reading from TrackMan, Blast, Rapsodo or HitTrax. Name the date and the device.
4. A coach or trainer with a name-brand radar. Name the date and the device.

These count for the least. A number he gave himself, with no date. A hand time. A number he touched once, with no setting on it. Those are the ones this page is asking you to replace.

Check the grades while you are at it

Grades are scored on their own. We compare him to each school's own admitted range. There is no one national bar. A test score can change which schools can reach for him. So can one strong semester. Families go straight to the gun and forget this.

What we will not do

We do not move his range because a family disagrees with it. We move it when a number moves. That is the reason the rest of the report can be trusted.

A remeasure is not a promise that his range goes up. It is how the range gets tested.

We say what we can see. We say when we cannot see anything. We never treat a family as though they made a number up. Most uncommitted juniors are just not in our public record. That record is built from players who have committed.
