What Is the Frame Score in Baseball Recruiting?
A frame score is a single number that captures a prospect's physical build and how much room he has left to grow. Height is the biggest factor. Body type, current weight for his size, and the physical development still ahead all go into the score too.
The scale is continuous. The floor in our database is 67.8. The top of the actively recruited range is 77.0 and above. Most recruited first basemen land somewhere between those two points, from 1,459 profiles.
Here is an easy way to picture it. Take two high school first basemen. One is a sophomore: 6'0", 155 pounds, lean and long with a lot of growing still ahead. The other is a junior: 6'2", 215 pounds, physically mature and already carrying present strength. Both play the same position. But those two players are not equally ready to hold a corner spot in a college lineup three years from now. Frame score tries to capture that gap. It is not just about today. It is about where the physical ceiling points.
Every other fielding position in our database is judged on performance outputs alone. Shortstops and outfielders are measured on exit velocity, sixty time, and throw velocity. Catchers add pop time to that list. Those are outputs. A player runs a base or throws across the diamond, and the number reflects what happened.
Frame is different. It is partly an input. It shapes what a first baseman will be able to do before he ever takes a college at-bat.
Why Does First Base Have a Frame Score When Other Positions Don't?
First base is the one position where a prospect's physical build is a direct part of the job, not just background information.
A shortstop can be 5'10" and 175 pounds and earn a college offer on arm velocity, range, and bat. His frame does not need to project to a power corner spot. The bat standard at shortstop is different because defense and speed carry part of the production load for the lineup.
A first baseman does not have that same flexibility. He is a corner bat in a college lineup. Every program that recruits a first baseman is asking the same question: can this player hit enough to earn his spot? There is no defensive premium to fall back on.
Reach matters too. A taller first baseman with longer arms extends the infield's range. He catches throws in the dirt that a shorter player cannot reach. He turns short-hops into outs on throws up the line. Those plays do not show up in any velocity number. They show up in frame.
This is why frame exists at first base and nowhere else. Physical build is a real performance input at this position: catch radius, power projection, and the ability to hold a corner spot in a lineup that demands run production. That logic does not apply to shortstop, center field, or behind the plate in the same direct way. It applies at first base.

One note on Bands 2 and 3: those two bands together span only about 1.2 points, and Band 3 alone is less than three-tenths of a point wide. A prospect right at the border of those two bands is physically very similar to a prospect in the adjacent band. A few pounds of added muscle or a fraction of an inch can shift the composite either way. Coaches looking at this part of the sample are reading the overall build, not parsing the decimal.

Neither profile is automatically stronger. They tell different stories. One is a physically elite prospect with a bat that still needs time. The other is a bat-first player whose frame raises a real evaluation question. Coaches weigh both honestly against their specific roster needs.
Arm velocity factors in differently for first basemen than at other infield spots.
